george h.w. bush had good growth. he lost the election because bill clinton and ross perot convinced people the economy was struggling. this race this year looks a little bit like 2004. george w. bush had very struggling numbers. not so strong, decent third quarter, decent third quarter helped president bush heading into his re-election campaign. look how weak growth has been in this election year in the obama presidency? well below even what it was in 2004 for george w. bush and the second quarter drops more. very anemic growth. we don't know the third quarter numbers. we'll get those before the election. president obama we know he's trying to do something no one's done with fdr, win with the unemployment rate above 7.2%. look at gdp numbers to win, it would be a bit of history. >> certainly would be. john, thanks very much. we're going to have much more coverage, full coverage of tonight's debate president obama and governor romney face-to-face as american voters weigh their choice. the first presidential debate tak

you played -- you helped al gore in the bush. you played george w. bush. was he sighing in the rehearsals like he was on stage? was he breathing like that? that got on the nerves of a lot of folks. >> i did not notice any irregular breathing patterns of the vice president. i thought it was cheap that was analyzed and overanalyzed. >> got him a lot of publicity in the days that followed. >> what you could see in the press he was honestly appalled to be standing on stage with george w. bush. he thought bush was completely unworthy and had no business running for president and you could tell. he would roll his eyes. you could see that. i was playing bush. this is a worry for president obama. he debated john mccain who is an american hero. and senator obama served with senator mccain. even though he didn't agree barack obama had a very high degree of respect for john mccain looking across that stage. i fear -- he lacks that looking at romney. might not only he as he underestimate governor romney but may show -- this is a huge ri risk, he may show some of that

it was only because george h.w. bush and clinton pushed for his inclusion. four years later, ross perot runs for president again. he had $29 million in taxpayer funds. 79% of the american people wanted to see him in the debates. yet, he was excluded. this time, the candidates wanted to keep him out. bob dole was desperate to keep him out of the debate because he thought that ross perot would take votes away from him. bill clinton did not want anyone to watch the debates. he wanted a non event. bill clinton of the two -- agreed to include ross perot on the condition that one of the debates was canceled, and the other was scheduled opposite the world series of baseball, and there were no follow-up questions. that is what the american people got. exactly as president clinton wanted, by design, the lowest debate audience in history. who took the heat? not the candidates. the polls after the debate showed 50% of the public blamed the commission. only 13% blamed president clinton, 5% blame the bob dole. the role that the commission played along the candidates to e

the same was with george bush. when he ran, he did great work for us. we had a great relationship, the things he did for california. how quickly he was out there with our fires, how quickly he responded, all the needs that we had. and of course i endorsed him right away, even though we didn't agree on everything, but he was my man. so some other times you just figure, like, i got to wait a little bit, i want to hear the debates, i'm going to look forward to the debates, then i make up my mind. that's whe

back in 2000, the establishment group believed that al gore beat george bush in that debate. go back and watch that and you will laugh and the genuine article. it's not exactly fair the debate itself. richard nixon had to stand on the same stage with jack kennedy. reagan never said what he would do to spring the hostages. that was tough enough, wouldn't you say? against pesky ross perot as well. john mccain had to defend an economy falling all around him.

that was a george bush proposal and a ted kennedy proposal. put the federal government in secondary education. i voted against no child left behind. we need to vote to repeal that. and the lady that called n. karen, i bet she probably agrees with me on that. if she's a true conservative, she did, but she's going to vote straight party like most of the republicans. i'm going to take very, very few republican votes. but i've been pretty consistent on my principles over the years and i have always been for ending illegal immigration and greatly reducing legal immigration because i recognize more than any other candidate what bringing in so many persons from third world countries is doing to this nation. it is making us more socialist in philosophy and as obama did well in 2008, massive immigration, illegal and legal. a big factor in it. and you've got to have someone that will stand up to that, and i will, the only one who will. host: matt smith is following on the caller from virginia saying she rehashes the two-party arrogance. if your candidat
